listing
all your wonderful talents
One
of the important things that an applicant for scholarships
or college admission must keep in mind and understand is the
that process of winning these valuable prizes is a very competitive
process. Selecting who will earn and win a scholarship or
to be admitted to college is determined through a difficult
and competitive process which actually puts all the candidates
competing against each other. There will be winners and\ losers.
Some will get congratulatory letters and others will receive
regret notices.
The focus
of this article is to assist and help applicants to learn
to present themselves in the best possible light and thus
increase ones opportunity to get an acceptance and award letter.
To do this, the applicant needs to demonstrate that one does
well in school and explain what personal talents on has. One
needs to explain how one is using what one is learning plus
how one is developing and using and ones talents. I
realize that many persons that apply find it very hard to
speak highly of themselves. I have spoken with many students
that have shared that they believe that if they list all of
their talents skills, accomplishments and attributes on the
application that the judges will think that the applicant
is self-centered, egotistical and conceited. With regards
to competing and listing ones abilities on the applications,
this is not the case at all.
Persons
that serve as both application readers and judges are responsible
to review the applications and select the very best candidates.
There is normally many more applicants than awards or seats
available. If the judges are never going to meet the applicant
face-to-face and they have to select winners from what is
on the application then it is very important to provide them
with realistic information that will demonstrate that one
is the best candidate. A good idea to remember is that
judges are always looking the "better than average"
qualities that students can offer the college and the scholarship
agency.
Again,
the applicant has only one opportunity to motivate the judges
to pick you and all they have to determine the best contestants
is by what information is listed on the application. If the
student fails to list, mention or highlight outstanding personal
abilities and talents that one has then the judges have absolutely
no way of taking them into consideration. They read many applications
so the important information must be clearly listed.
Humility,
modesty and meekness are regarded by many as wonderful personality
qualities to have but in matters of applying and competing
for scholarships and college admission it is important to
limit ones humility and proceed to list all of ones
outstanding character qualities. Failure to do so may actually
hold one back from winning the financial assistance on needs
of getting admitted into college.
One approach
to highlighting your talents on the application without sounding
self absorbed yet highlights ones true capability and
exceptional skills is to list who and what organization has
formally given recognition to your talents. It is one thing
for the application to write "I am a great singer because
my friends and I think so". A much better approach is
to say "I have received the following awards and recognition
for my singing and I truly love to sing." It is okay
to also list those awards even if one did not receive first
place. Ongoing participation in competitive activities is
also considered and recognized as a positive personality quality.
Listing
ones awards and trophies for what one has accomplished
with ones capabilities is an important way of letting
these organizations know what you are capable of in the future
and gives them a basis to justify for them selecting you over
the other applicants.
Go ahead,
list all of your wonderful God given talents and abilities.
